The Coat of Arms of the Mock Mayor of Barton
In September 2011, we took a fun learning resource to Barton Fair to help the children there learn about the history of the Mock Mayor of Barton and heraldry.
We showed the children the historic Coat of Arms of the Barton Mayor held at Gloucestershire Archives and asked if they could use their imagination to design their own.
So what did they learn?!
Well, they learnt that the Arms of the Mayor of Barton are a shield in which appear the face of Democritus (the “laughing philosopher”), a Saxon white horse, and three roses. It is flanked by a goose and an ass and its crest is a jester’s cap and bells. They also learnt that the latin motto “Dulce est Desipere in Loco” means “It is delightful to play the fool occasionally”.
However, the mottos that they created for their designs were far from foolish: “Peace in Gloucester” and “I ‘heart’ Barton Street” to name two of the best!
We were so impressed with their new designs that we showed them to the Mayor of Barton and he said they were wonderful too!
